Machete Taqueria

Machete Taqueria now open on Barton Road

It’s always taco time at Machete Taqueria.

Redlands’ newest restaurant is owned by Elena Bonifaz, and serves something unique to the city’s dining scene: machetes. Machetes are a type of taco that originated in Mexico City, getting its name from the way it looks after being folded. In addition to machetes, the menu features huaraches, street tacos, lettuce wraps, and sopes, plus craft beer.

For each item, diners get to choose one or two proteins and vegetables: calabaza (squash); tinga (shredded chicken with chipotle marinade); papas con chorizo (Mexican sausage with potatoes); champiñones (mushrooms); picadillo (spicy ground beef with vegetables); carne al pastor (grilled pork with citrus marinade, served with pineapple); or bistek (carne asada).

On Machete’s website, Bonifaz says the taqueria knows “that food and eating a meal together is a celebration of life and a social event. When you come to enjoy the fresh variety of south Mexican recipes, you’ll be with friends.”

Machete Taqueria is at 1580 Barton Road, Unit C, and is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. —Catherine
